What Makes My Private Stuttering Therapy Sessions Different
When people find All Island Speech and Stuttering Therapy, they’re often feeling frustrated, overwhelmed, or simply lost. They’ve tried school services or general speech therapy and are still searching for answers. That’s where I come in—Lori Melnitsky-not just as a licensed speech-language pathologist, but as someone who has lived with stuttering myself.
1. I Understand Stuttering—Because I Live It
I’ve stuttered for most of my life. I know what it feels like to avoid phone calls, to worry about introductions, and to walk away from conversations with regret. I also know what it takes to grow through those moments. This personal experience allows me to connect with clients in a way that goes beyond textbooks and techniques. My sessions aren’t about “fixing” you—they’re about helping you build confidence, resilience, and real communication skills.
2. This Isn’t General Speech Therapy—It’s Focused and Specialized
Many families don’t realize that most school-based and private therapists don’t specialize in stuttering. Stuttering requires a very specific skill set—both technical and emotional. At All Island Speech, stuttering is not a side area of interest—it’s the heart of what I do. From preschoolers to adults, I tailor each session to the client’s unique needs and goals.
3. You’ll Practice Real-Life Speaking Situations
We don’t just stay in the therapy room (or Zoom screen). My clients learn to speak in real-world situations—whether that’s ordering a coffee, answering the phone, interviewing for a job, or speaking up in class. These moments matter. And practicing them in a supportive environment can be the difference between avoidance and empowerment.
4. I Blend Evidence-Based Therapy With Coaching and Mindset Work
Yes, we use evidence-based fluency techniques like fluency shaping, easy onsets, and desensitization. But we also talk about fear, mindset, and the emotional roller coaster that often comes with stuttering. You’re not just learning how to say words—you’re learning how to handle tough situations, advocate for yourself, and speak with more ease.
5. Parents and Families Are Part of the Process
If your child stutters, I work with you as well. Families play a crucial role in a child’s fluency journey, and I make sure you feel supported and informed every step of the way. You’ll leave with strategies to use at home—and peace of mind that you’re not alone in this.
6. My Story Inspires Hope
I began my career in accounting. After years of hiding my stutter, I decided to follow my passion and became a speech-language pathologist. I now help others find their voice. Whether you’re a child, teen, or adult who stutters, I want you to know: it’s never too late to work on your communication—and it’s never too late to be heard. Contact Lori@allislandspeech.com
