My child is smart but not handing in Homework… Help!

Updated: Dec 8, 2021

I hear this so often and if this happens to your child you are not alone. In fact you are right, your child probably is as smart or smarter than the child who does complete assignments on time.

This is common with ADHD. These are a few reasons why this happens.

  1. These students need structure and a monitoring system to complete their assignments. They struggle with prioritizing tasks and become easily overwhelmed.

  2. They find it difficult to put their thoughts into sentences and paragraphs. It takes them longer. They often lose hope and become easily fatigued. This leads to frustration and often anxiety.

  3. It is challenging for the ADHD brain to focus on multiple tasks. This becomes difficult when multiple assignments are given out. For ex: when completing an assignment they have to first complete many tasks, such a listening to and writing down assignment steps and details . Students with ADHD often get easily distracted along the way and forget what they were doing.

  4. Organizational skills are lacking. Disorganization leads to multiple issues, such as frustration and procrastination.

  5. Memory-short term memory often is not as good as others. They cannot remember the details of what is being told. It often goes in one ear and out the other as they say. Then they feel unfocused and scattered lowering self esteem.

Have no fear help is available for these students. They can succeed and learn to lead successful lives.
