I wanted to share an article that was published in NY METRO Parent magazine. I was happy to be interviewed and quoted in it.

It was nice to see an article that not only talked about stuttering, but also diagnosis and treatment of stuttering.

Triumph over Stuttering-Newsday Article-Lori Melnitsky Feature
  Posted On: January 19th, 2011

On Sunday Jan. 16, 2011, I was featured in Newsday.  The part where I discussed how I acheived greater fluency was edited so here is how it happened in a nutshell.

1. I had to increase confidence and self esteem.

2. I had to attend intensive speech therapy for many years.

3. I had to stop beating myself up for not achieving fluency.

4. I had to accept that I stutter and might sometimes be ashamed of it even though it was not my fault.

5. I had to re-learn how to breathe properly, pause and ease into my words.

6. I read many self help books along the way.

7. I joined the National Stuttering Association and realized I was not alone.

8. I practiced my fluency tools endlessly.

9. I desensitized myself to fear.

10.  I overcame my fear of talking and being heard!

Hard to explain it all in a blog post, but I wanted to clarify what I hoped the article would have said. tks for reading. Lori

I am going to sneak in a little information about PROMPT. I am PROMPT certified.  Many children are being denied services for articulation, oral motor and suspected apraxia.  I know I write mostly about stuttering, but I have a large caseload of children receiving PROMPT and see many of them privately . It is highly successful and you could check www.promptinstitute.com for a thorough description.  Please contact me for more information,

Stutter free speech-Does it have to put the listener to sleep?
  Posted On: April 5th, 2010

Where is it written that people who stutter who have undergone intensive therapy must speak so slow they will put the listener to sleep?  Where did this notion come from?  I don’t remember reading it in books or research.  Ok, I am being obnoxious, but the truth is this negative belief holds many stutterers back from achieving an increased level of fluency.  I do not speak like this.  Yes, I use fluency tools, but have adapted them to a comfortable way of speaking.  What are your feelings on this?

BTW-I am going to put a video on my website so you can hear how I sound and what I teach others.  Stay tuned!!
